Living green is sustainable living. It’s a lifestyle in which individuals endeavor to reduce the number of natural resources used and the amount of waste created to benefit the earth. It aims to promote a lifestyle that is eco-friendly through various means such as energy consumption, transportation alternatives, and waste management. To go-green, individuals usually must change their whole outlook as it pertains to the earth and how their choices affect it. As trendy as it has become, it takes more than a couple of changes to really be considered living green. Sustainable-living is a big commitment.Green living makes one live healthfully. It saves money and also the environment. It is essential to live green in order to save the earth from human excess. But homeowners don’t always know which ideas to follow for green living. Here are some ideas you can incorporate into your home.

Green living ideas

The main idea of living green is to reduce the waste discarded from your home. Now, many companies are taking steps to reduce their packaging. This is a good idea to follow for living green. Another idea to follow is to reuse durable containers and products. Bring reusable bags to the grocery store. Buy products in glass containers that can be recycled or repurposed in your home.

The other major ideas for living green are:

  • Love the planet. Using organic products and cosmetics is a way to lead a green life. Use hormone-free dairy products and try to buy these products in glass bottles, because glass is reusable.
  • Grow plants or trees that give off oxygen.
  • Avoid plastic containers unless they are reusable.
  • Recycle. If your city or waste removal support recycling, do your best to follow their guidelines. If there are no recycling centers available in your area, reduce your waste, and upcycle items you no longer use to someone else.

Why choose green living?

Health: There are many health benefits. Green transportation such as biking or walking gives a person exercise and reduces pollution—living-green includes buying local, which gives individuals fresher options. Organically-grown produce reduces the number of chemicals and pesticides in food.

Finances: Using natural, renewable resources like natural light instead of electricity or filtered water in reusable containers instead of bottled water costs less. Buying local supports neighborhood vendors and helps the community while cutting out the expense of transportation. Lower utility bills too, with solar and wind technology.

Future: Prepare for the future by saving it. By using renewable resources, cutting waste, and reducing pollution, the future of the earth can be secured for later generations.

Who doesn't love a fresh smelling carpet? Carpet cleaners can contain lots of unknown chemicals and can really do a job on your wallet. Here are a few recipes for homemade carpet freshener.   Recipe #1 Ingredients: 1 cup crushed dried herbs. Use any herbs you like (rosemary, southernwood, or lavender) 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking soda 1. Combine all the ingredients in a large jar or other container with a tight-fitting lid. 2. Shake well to blend. 3. Sprinkle some of the mixture on your carpet, let it sit for an hour or so, and then vacuum.   Recipe #2 Ingredients: 2 cups baking soda Essential oil (pick your favorite scent) 2 cups lavender, buds 2 cups rosemary 1. Put 2 cups of baking soda in a glass or ceramic bowl; with the back of a metal spoon get rid of the lumps. 2. Add the essential oil (approximately 20 drops) and mix. 3. Add the lavender and rosemary, mix and then put in a plastic bag or glass container. 4 Let it sit for 2-3 days so the oil can be absorbed into the baking soda (the oil can stain the carpet if it is wet). 5. Sprinkle desired amount on the carpet, leave for a few hours then vacuum.

Furniture can be very expensive so of course you want yours to last for as long as possible. If your furniture is starting to show distress there are some quick and natural fixes to get it looking as good as new. Scratches in wood are one of the most common furniture problems. Repairing scratches can be easy. Here are a few ways to fix your furniture flaws without using chemicals: Tea Brew a cup of tea (use black tea). Make sure to let the tea bag steep for 2 to 3 minutes. If your wood is dark you will want to let the bag steep longer because the longer it steeps, the darker it will be. Dab the tea onto the scratches with a cotton swab. Be careful to wipe away the excess as the tea can also color the wood around the scratches. Depending on the color of the wood you may need to do more than one application. Iodine Use a cotton swab to apply iodine to the scratch. Use the same method as the tea remembering to wipe away the excess iodine so it doesn't stain the wood around the scratch. Instant Coffee                                                                                                                                       Instant coffee can be use to cover a scratch. Make a thick paste with the coffee granules and water, and rub the paste into the scratch. Walnut Meat Crack open a walnut and rub the walnut meat into the scratch. The oil from a walnut will conceal a surface scratch in wooden furniture. Polish the scratched area with a soft cloth.
